What each university says about housing exchange students.
Whether you get a hall place depends on your university and the year. Some guarantee one, several say plainly that they cannot, and the result can arrive only weeks before you fly. If you end up without exchange student housing on campus, start looking for short-term student accommodation early. Here is what each university publishes.
HKU exchange students
The University of Hong Kong
HKU tells exchange students that housing is short, and that places are generally easier to get in the spring semester than in the autumn. Its housing office says not every applicant is given a hall place, and results for Spring 2027 are released between 15 November and 15 December 2026.
CityU says a residence place is not guaranteed for exchange students and depends on availability and on nomination by exchange coordinators, with results in June for Semester 1 and mid-November for Semester 2. Students without a place are told to secure off-campus accommodation as soon as possible before arriving.
HKBU says its undergraduate halls are unavailable for 2026/27 because of a renovation project. Village CARE remains open, though residents are not guaranteed a particular college or room type, and HKBU warns that places close to campus are hard to find.
PolyU guarantees incoming exchange students university-managed accommodation in a twin-sharing room for 2026/27, with no single rooms. If you would rather not share, ask us which private rooms are free for your semester.
Hall places follow the university’s own dates. CityU, for one, tells exchange students who arrive before their housing term begins to make their own arrangements at their own cost, such as a hotel. With us, your move-in date is agreed with you, so tell us when you land and we will tell you which rooms are free from that day.
University wording is quoted or summarised from each university’s published exchange information, checked October 2026. Policies change every year, so always confirm with your university. Stride is an independent residence: apart from our accommodation partnership with HKAPA, we are not run or endorsed by any of these universities.
Furnishing a flat for four months makes no sense. Everything you need is already in the room and in the price.
Arrive with a suitcase
Every room comes with a bed, a full-size desk, a wardrobe and storage, and the building has a full shared kitchen. Nothing to buy when you arrive, nothing to sell when you leave.
One all-in monthly price
Electricity, air conditioning, water, fast Wi-Fi and weekly cleaning of the shared spaces are all included. No utility accounts to open and no bills to split.
Book from wherever you are
Take a video viewing from home, upload your university confirmation letter, pay securely and move in. You deal directly with the team that runs the building.
Two minutes to the MTR
Wong Chuk Hang station on the South Island Line is a two minute walk. Admiralty is seven minutes away with no interchange, and most campuses are 12 to 17 minutes away.
24/7 security
Round-the-clock security and facial recognition entry, which counts for a lot when the city is new and you are getting back late.
Somewhere to study, train and meet people
Study rooms and quiet booths, two gyms, a games lounge, a music room and a rooftop terrace, in over 9,600 square feet of shared space.
Why not rent a flat for one semester?
You can, but the universities’ own housing guides explain why it is hard work for a stay this short.
Agent commission and stamp dutyHKUST’s off-campus housing guide notes that tenants renting through an estate agent normally pay commission of half a month’s rent, plus half the stamp duty.HKUST off-campus housing guide (opens in a new tab)
Long leases and separate billsHKAPA’s accommodation guide sets private flats, with two-year leases, separate utility bills and agent commission, against student accommodation, where rent is usually all-inclusive.HKAPA accommodation guide (opens in a new tab)

Residents who came to Hong Kong from somewhere else, on what made the move easier. See what is on at Stride.
Moving to a new country for my Master’s is a big step, so I wanted somewhere that felt safe and welcoming from day one. Stride stood out because it is a student-only building with 24/7 security and facial recognition access, which honestly gives me (and my parents) real peace of mind. As someone who does not know Hong Kong yet, having a built-in community of other students made it feel less daunting. And Wong Chuk Hang itself has this quieter, creative vibe, galleries and cafes, that feels like a good place to actually settle in and focus.
Adip, HKU Master of AI in Business
I arrived in Hong Kong quite late, when dorms were already tight. I ran around everywhere, until I walked into Stride. I loved the single room the moment I saw it: bright, spotless and with a lovely view. The commute to Cyberport and HKU is very manageable. Amid so much uncertainty, this place gave me a calm place to land and a relaxed start to life here.

Exchange student questions, answered.
What exchange students ask us most, plus the visa and identity card basics. On anything official, your university’s exchange office has the final word.
What is the minimum stay for an exchange student?+
One semester. That is our standard minimum, for either semester. If your dates do not line up exactly with a semester, tell us and we will see what we can do.
How long is one semester in Hong Kong?+
About four to five months, once you count arriving before classes and leaving after exams. Semester 1 runs from late August or early September to December, and Semester 2 from January to May. Exact dates differ by university.
Can I stay for just three or four months?+
Our minimum is one semester, and a Hong Kong semester already comes to around four months of classes and exams. If your programme is shorter or your dates are unusual, send them to us and we will tell you what is possible.
What can I do if I do not get a university hall place?+
Hall places for exchange students are not guaranteed at every university: HKU and CityU both say so in writing, and CityU tells students without a place to secure off-campus accommodation as soon as possible before arriving. We take exchange students for a single semester, so send us your dates as soon as you have your result.
Can I move in before my semester starts?+
Tell us when you land. We agree your move-in date with you rather than fixing it to a university housing calendar, and we will tell you which rooms are free from that day.
What is included in the monthly price?+
A fully furnished room, electricity, air conditioning, water, fast Wi-Fi, weekly cleaning of the shared spaces, 24/7 security and access to every shared space in the building, from the two gyms to the study rooms and the rooftop terrace.
Which rooms can I book for one semester?+
We have private solo rooms, and shared doubles and triples. Which ones are free depends on your dates, so tell us your semester and we will show you what is available.
Can I book from overseas without seeing the room?+
Yes. Book a video viewing and we will walk you through the building and the rooms that are free for your dates. Then you choose your room, upload your university confirmation letter, pay securely and move in.
How much is the deposit?+
You reserve your room with a deposit. Tell us your move-in date and the room you want, and we will confirm the exact amount before you pay anything.
How do I pay from overseas?+
Our team confirms the payment details with you before you pay. Families paying from mainland China can follow the step-by-step guide to cross-border transfers on our FAQ page.
Do I need a Hong Kong identity card for a one-semester exchange?+
It depends on the limit of stay on your visa, not on the length of your course. Anyone aged 11 or over who is permitted to stay in Hong Kong for more than 180 days must register for a Hong Kong identity card within 30 days of arrival, and anyone permitted to stay 180 days or less does not need to register. Check the limit of stay on your e-Visa and landing slip, and follow the Immigration Department’s guidance.
Yes. Unless you have the right of abode or the right to land in Hong Kong, you need a student visa or entry permit to study here, normally sponsored by your host university: you cannot study as a visitor. The Immigration Department’s study arrangements expressly cover exchange programmes. Processing normally takes about six weeks once the Department has every document. Students from mainland China apply through the host university and also need an Exit-entry Permit and exit endorsement after the e-Visa is issued. Your university’s exchange office will guide you through it.
No. Stride is an independent student residence, open to students from campuses across Hong Kong who can show a university confirmation letter. The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts has chosen us as its off-campus accommodation partner from 2026/27, but we are not run or endorsed by any other university.
